Some Liquor with Your Groceries?

November 16, 2007

Since my new apartment is beginning to look more like a home and less like a storage facility, I decided to check out some of the local grocery stores to stock up on some essentials.

I’m accustomed to living in a place with one major grocery chain.  Here in Tucson, there are many…  Safeway, Fry’s, Bashas, Trader Joe’s, AJ’s…  And those are only the ones I have recognized to be grocery stores.

I totally dig Trader Joe’s.  I’m all about being green, and this store stocks environmentally friendly and organic items.  And they encourage the use of canvas shopping bags…  they don’t even offer plastic bags!  [Most of you should know my hatred for the over consumption of plastic bags]

Unfortunately, they don’t sell all the basics, so I checked out AJ’s Fine Foods.  It’s a pretentious, little store offering a limited selection of foods, but a whole lot of crap (that shouldn’t even be in a grocery store).  I did find some yummy Japanese foods that I hadn’t seen in the States before, so I was pleased with that.

The weirdest thing about AJ’s is the huge basket of one-serving liquors at the end of the check-out line.  What’s up with that?  Do people often say, “Oh, great, I did forget to pick up my vodka today…”

Maybe AJ’s is thinking, “Hey, on your way out, why not have one for the road?”  Remind me to be extra careful when driving through that area…
